Used to think variant covers were a cash grab until a collector showed me his stash

I was pretty vocal about hating variant covers for years. Called them a scam to get you to buy the same comic twice. Then my buddy Dave invited me over to his place in Portland and pulled out his 1:100 ratio virgin cover of Immortal Hulk #37. The art was by Alex Ross and it was like a painting. He told me he paid $150 for it back in 2019 and now it books for over $800. I still don't chase every variant but I get why people do now. Has anyone else had a change of heart on these things?

Nah man, they're still a cash grab.

Oh PLEASE. Every time something gets popular suddenly it's a "cash grab" like clockwork. Yeah man, because companies definitely put MILLIONS into R&D just to rip people off for a quick buck. That makes SO much sense. Tell me you've never worked in product development without telling me you've never worked in product development. If it was really just about the money they'd throw together some garbage in a week instead of spending years on it. But hey, keep holding onto that 2015 mindset if it makes you feel better.

My uncle used to run a little diner back in the 90s and whenever a new burger joint opened up nearby, people would scream "cash grab" at them too. Then he'd go eat there and the fries were actually good. Funny how that works. He always said if it tastes good and people want it, it's not a scam, it's just business. Reminds me of when everyone lost their minds over that newfangled frappuccino thing.
