Wasted $60 on a variant cover that nobody actually wanted

I grabbed a second printing variant for issue #12 of some indie series I was into, thinking it'd be worth something down the line. Paid $60 for it at a convention last year because the seller hyped it up as a low print run... Turned out it was a store exclusive with like 500 copies, but nobody even talks about that series anymore. Tried to sell it on eBay and couldn't get $10 for it, even after listing it three times. Now it's just sitting in my short box taking up space, a constant reminder of a bad impulse buy. Has anyone else gotten burned on variant covers that turned out to be worthless?

Even the eBay buyers knew that series was dead on arrival.

My buddy dropped $80 on a foil variant for a #1 issue that got canceled after four issues, and now he uses it as a coaster for his coffee mug... said the ink actually started peeling off.
