Lost 20 minutes on a job because I forgot my knife sharpener in Galveston

I was on a repair job at a dock in Galveston last Tuesday and my cutting knife was so dull I couldn't get through a 2 inch rubber hose. Ended up having to swim back to the boat to grab my backup knife, which wasted a bunch of bottom time. Now I keep a spare sharpener clipped inside my wetsuit pocket so it's always on me. Has anyone else had crap tools mess up a dive?

Hold on, hold on. I gotta push back on this a bit. You say you "forgot" your sharpener, but honestly it sounds like you just didn't plan well enough. A real pro checks their gear before they even leave the dock, not when they're already underwater. Losing 20 minutes because you couldn't cut a hose is on you, not on your tools. The knife wasn't the problem - your lack of prep was. I've been doing this for years and I can tell you, if you're relying on a backup knife that's stashed away somewhere, you're already setting yourself up to fail. The whole "crap tools" thing is just an excuse for not having your act together.

Nah man, I gotta say I kinda disagree with @michael_bennett11 here. We've all had days where nothing goes right, even with the best planning. I've shown up to jobs with my truck loaded and still forgot a damn chainsaw file or something small like that. Shit happens, you know? Forgetting a sharpener doesn't make someone a bad diver, it just means they're human. Losing 20 minutes on a hose is a pain but it's not the end of the world. Give the guy a break, we've all been there.
