Walk-in cooler with baskets vs shelves - no contest after 3 weeks
I've been running a small catering kitchen out of my spot in Portland for about 6 months now. The old owner left us this walk-in with just wire shelves, and stuff was always getting knocked over or lost in the back. I finally swapped to those heavy duty plastic baskets from a restaurant supply place downtown. Total game changer. I spent $180 on 12 baskets and a rack system, and now I can actually pull out a whole basket of prepped onions without playing fridge tetris. The shelves made everything pile up and get messy real quick. Has anyone else tried those stacking bins or am I late to the party?

The baskets probably salvage way less food than shelves do since you can actually see everything without digging. Most people overlook how much gets pushed to the back of a wire shelf and forgotten until it turns into science experiments. A few bucks on baskets beats throwing out half a case of spoiled produce every week.

Wait you're saying people actually let produce rot that often on wire shelves? That's insane to me because I thought the whole point of those was better airflow and visibility. Guess I've been giving wire shelves too much credit this whole time.
