Just realized my neighbor's garage fire changed how I think about old wiring

Had a talk with the electrician who checked my place after that fire two blocks over last month. He told me most houses from the 70s have aluminum wiring that's just waiting to fail. Said he's seen three close calls just this year in our neighborhood alone. Hit different because I've been putting off that panel upgrade for five years now. Made me think about all the little warnings we ignore until something actually happens. Anyone else have a similar wake up call about something in their house?

Old wiring just waiting to fail" really changed my mind, I always thought it was fine until now.

That 1970s aluminum wiring is no joke. @joseph932, I had my place checked after the same fire and the guy found two outlets that were already starting to char. I put off my panel upgrade for years too, but after seeing those scorch marks I called the electrician the next day. Definitely makes you think about what else might be hiding in the walls.
