I spent $80 on a fancy insulated travel mug and it was a total waste
Everyone on here talks about how a good thermos is a commuter must-have, but my experience was different. I got the HydroFlask Trail Series for my 45-minute bus ride into Chicago, thinking it would keep my coffee hot. It did, but the lid was so hard to open one-handed on a crowded bus that I nearly spilled it twice. Has anyone found a good mug that actually works for a bumpy ride without needing two hands?

Remember my friend who got that Yeti rambler for her train ride? She loved how hot it kept her tea, but she had the same problem with the lid. She actually chipped a nail trying to twist it open while holding her bag. She ended up just carrying it open, which totally defeated the point. She switched to a simple Contigo with a push-button lid and hasn't looked back.

Yeah, that's a solid point from @vera_lewis. It feels like a lot of "premium" stuff adds complicated parts that just break the simple use. My nice pen leaks, and my fancy kettle has a lid that's impossible to clean. They solve one problem but make a new, dumber one.

Totally get that. I used to be all about the fancy gear with extra parts, thought it meant better quality. But after my third "premium" travel mug lid mechanism jammed with old coffee gunk, the cheap one with the simple flip top became the real winner. Sometimes the fix is just less stuff to break.
