My neck gets tight from looking down at my phone on the subway

I read on my phone when I ride the subway to pass the time. Now my neck feels sore and stiff when I arrive at work. What do you all do to avoid neck strain while commuting?

How do you hold your phone right now? I used to get the same thing, so I started holding my phone up closer to my eye level so I'm not craning my neck down. It looks a little silly but it works. I also try to do some really slow chin tucks, just pulling my head back over my shoulders for a few seconds at a time. Sometimes I just stare straight ahead at the ads on the wall for a minute to reset.

Last month at the library, I lifted my phone up high to avoid looking down and accidentally made eye contact with a guy across the room. He gave me a weird look, like I was pointing the camera at him or something. I had to quickly look away and pretend I was just reading something on the screen. Now I'm paranoid about where I aim my phone when I do that.

Yeah, the 'looks a little silly' part... I feel that, especially after @xena858's awkward moment. Lifting it up does stop the neck crank, but now I'm paranoid about aiming it. Honestly, though, a little embarrassment beats neck pain any day.
