Noise canceling headphones broke my commute, now I'm lost

I got a pair of cheap ANC earbuds last week and wore them on the 40 minute bus ride downtown. First day was great, I could actually hear my podcast over the engine noise. But now I'm noticing I miss the little sounds, like the doors hissing or the driver calling out stops. Twice I almost missed my transfer because I was too zoned out. Is anyone else going back to regular earbuds or just dealing with the background rumble?
