The difference between a cheap thermal paste and a good one is way bigger than people think
I used to grab whatever generic paste was cheapest, thinking it was all the same goop. Last month, I had a gaming PC in the shop running 10 degrees Celsius hotter than it should. I cleaned it and put on my usual cheap paste, no change. On a whim, I spent $12 on a tube of Arctic MX-6 and redid it. The temps dropped a full 15 degrees under load, just like that. The cheap stuff dries out faster and doesn't spread as well, leaving tiny gaps you can't even see. That one tube has fixed three 'overheating mystery' machines for me already. It's not about the brand name, it's about the quality of the compound. Has anyone else seen a jump this big just from switching pastes?

Honestly, I've never seen that kind of difference in my builds. I just use the paste that comes with the cooler and my temps are always fine. People probably just apply it wrong and blame the paste.

Oh man, my buddy swore by the stock paste too. Then he swapped to a decent tube on his old CPU and dropped a solid seven degrees under load. Sometimes the cheap stuff just can't keep up.

My Ryzen 7 5800X ran hot with the fancy paste everyone recommends. Switched back to the stock gray stuff that came with my cooler and it actually dropped two degrees in Cinebench. I've built a dozen PCs for friends and the paste brand never makes a real difference if you spread it right. People just like buying expensive tubes to feel like they fixed something.
