Dropped $450 on a power trowel from 1989 and it paid off in one day

Picked up an old Whiteman trowel at an auction outside Nashville for $450... thing was beat to hell but ran smooth. Got a big warehouse floor job last week and it saved me about 3 hours of hand finishing. Has anyone else had luck with old iron instead of buying new?

That old iron runs forever if you keep the oil changed and blades straight.

You mentioned the oil changes and blade straightening, and that's good advice, but I think you're missing one critical thing. Most people forget to clean the lint trap after every single use, not just when it looks full. A clogged lint trap is what actually burns out those old motors, not the blades being slightly off. Also, if you're using that iron on synthetic fabrics without turning the heat down, you're slowly melting the coating on the plates. That buildup will mess with the glide way worse than a blade that's a hair out of line.

Nah, the lint trap thing matters way more than most people realize. That's the real killer, not the oil.
