Warning: My kid asked me why we don't just pour concrete flat and let it dry, and I had to think for a minute.

Good question. Tried that once with a patch in the backyard. Ended up with a giant, cracked mess. You need those grooves and a proper base for a reason.

Yeah I used to think that was overkill too, but @johnrobinson is right, skipping the prep work just costs you later.
