Wrote off fiber mesh in slabs for 12 years, poured a driveway in Tulsa last week that made me eat that
I always figured mesh was a waste since it ends up on the ground after the first pass anyway, but a guy I work with talked me into trying it on a 24 by 30 drive and I watched the cracks stay tight through the whole cure. Now I'm second guessing every slab I've done without it. Any of you running mesh or macro fiber on residential drives, or am I overthinking one pour?
Man that mesh staying up on chairs is the whole ballgame right there. If it's laying on the dirt it does nothing, may as well not be in the mix at all. But once you get it pinned mid slab, it grabs the concrete right where the tension lives, so when it wants to shrink and crack it can't pull apart. I've seen the same thing on a shop pad, hairline cracks that never opened up vs pours without it that turned into real splits within a year. Do the same on your next few drives and track it, one pour could be luck but three or four in a row tells you something.
