My garage door opener died last Thursday and the repair guy said it was a 'planned obsolescence' chip. Is that even a thing?

Planned obsolescence chip" sounds about right. My last coffee maker had one of those, I'm pretty sure it was just my own laziness to clean it though. Feels like everything's built with a secret expiration date now.

@pathenderson I had a coffee maker that went through the same routine and finally figured out running a vinegar cycle once a month made it last years longer. Your mileage may vary but descaling solved my leaky gasket problem completely. Quick maintenance beats throwing money at a new machine every time.

Tell me about it, my last vacuum had a "planned obsolescence sensor" that went off every time I looked at the dustbin. Pretty sure the secret expiration date on my toaster was just two years of forgetting to shake out the crumbs, lmao.
