After 6 months, my balayage finally looks like the photo

I took a class in March and re-did my sectioning method around the crown, plus started using foils instead of doing it freehand. The last client's hair came out so dimensional, even my coworker asked what I changed. Has anyone else had a technique click that late?

Wait, six months for a balayage to finally look right? That seems like a really long time to be unhappy with your own work. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like if a technique takes that long to click, maybe the problem wasn't the sectioning. Could be you were just overthinking it the whole time. Foils vs freehand is a pretty basic choice, most people figure that out in their first year. I'm happy you got the result you wanted, but six months of bad hair on paying clients is a lot of do-overs. Maybe it's not the technique that needed changing, just your confidence in what you were already doing.
