My old instructor's comment about haircut prices hit me different last Tuesday
I was chatting with my cosmetology school instructor from like 8 years ago, she still works at the same shop in Tacoma. She said she charges $65 for a basic cut and trim now, and I laughed because I remember when she charged $35 back when I was learning. But then she told me she still does walk-in bang trims for free, and she said something like, "the ones who tip on a free service are the ones who stick around for a decade." That really made me rethink how I price my own touch-up appointments. I have a client who comes in every 5 weeks for a gloss and she always asks for a quick fringe fix, and I've been charging her like $15 each time. Last week I did it for free and she booked her next 3 appointments on the spot, plus she sent me two referrals. Has anyone else stopped nickel and diming the small stuff and seen better loyalty? I'm curious if that approach works in busier salons or if it just eats into your chair time.
