The older stylist at my first salon in Boise said to stop doing free bang trims and she was spot on
When I was fresh out of school at my first salon in Boise, I did free bang trims for anybody who walked in because I thought it would build loyal clients. The senior stylist there (her name was Dana, she had been behind the chair for 22 years) pulled me aside one slow Tuesday and said, "Honey, you're training people to expect free, and they'll leave the second someone else charges less anyway." I did not want to hear it at the time, but I started charging $10 for bang trims instead of nothing, and my no-show rate on those little 10 minute appointments dropped a lot because people actually valued the spot. What really proved her point was my client Rachel, who used to come in every 3 weeks for her free trim and never once booked a color or cut with me. After I started charging, she complained once, then went and paid $15 somewhere else and still does her own cuts at home. Dana retired last spring and I still text her pictures of my books when I have a good month. So now I want to hear from you all, do you charge for bang trims or use them as a loss leader to get people in the door?
