My old food processor finally gave up mid-chop on Sunday
I was halfway through slicing carrots for a stew when the blade just stopped spinning and smoke started pouring out, so now I'm trying to decide between spending $80 on a new one or going back to chopping by hand like I did in college.

$80 seems steep for a food processor. What brand was the old one that died mid-chop?

Mid-chop breakdowns are kind of a rite of passage for food processors honestly. They usually give you a few years of decent chopping before they quit dramatically. $80 is just the cost of admission these days for something that won't immediately fall apart. The old one was a generic store brand, nothing fancy, but it got the job done for about five years before the motor gave out. People act like kitchen appliances are supposed to last forever but they're basically glorified toys with blades.
