My mailman talked me out of a $60 Facebook Marketplace deal and I'm still thinking about it
So last Tuesday I'm standing at the end of my driveway in Akron waiting on a guy selling a "barely used" pressure washer for $60, and my mailman Dave pulls up and just says "you know that thing's stolen, right?" I laughed it off but he pointed out the seller wanted cash only, wouldn't meet at his house, and kept changing the pickup spot every hour. That got me thinking about how many times I've ignored those same red flags just because the price was good. I once drove 40 minutes to Parma for a $25 air compressor and the guy answered the door in his boxers holding a beer at 9am. Another time I paid $80 for a mountain bike and the serial number was scratched off, which I didn't even notice until I got home. Dave's been on this route for 11 years and he says he sees people get burned at the same three parking lots over and over. So now I'm curious, do you actually walk away when something feels off, or do you tell yourself it's fine and hand over the cash anyway?
Your mailman sounds like a hero honestly. Me? I bought a "like new" dirt bike off a guy who insisted we meet behind a Wendy's at 10pm, and I still handed him $200 cash. Bike lasted about three days before the engine just quit. My brother still brings it up at every family cookout, calls it my Wendy's bike. I keep telling myself I've learned my lesson but last month I almost bought a "gently used" trailer from a dude who wouldn't give me his last name.
