DAE remember hand signals over radios for blind picks?

Ten years back on a job in Bakersfield our whole crew ran blind picks off hand signals because the radios kept cutting out behind the steel. Now every lift gets a radio check before we start and I can count on one hand how many times I've signaled a load up this year. The signals still work fine, we just quit trusting them. Does anyone here still run a no-radio crew, or am I the only one who misses it?
