Boom angle sensor went haywire on a tower crane Tuesday...

Was picking a 4-ton HVAC unit at a job outside Dallas and the angle reading jumped from 45 to 12 degrees out of nowhere. Ground guy called it on the radio and I had to set the load down slow and climb up to check the sensor bracket myself. You guys replace these things or just reset them and hope for the best?

I finally saw what happens when you skip daily crane inspections

Been running a Grove RT530E for 5 years at the Port of Savannah and always did the AM walk-around. Three months ago I got lazy for two weeks, skipped the wire rope check. Ended up with a kinked cable that cost $1,200 to replace and a full day of downtime. Has anyone else had a close call from rushing through the pre-shift stuff?

Overheard a safety guy say most crane accidents happen under 10 tons and it stuck with me

I was grabbing coffee last week at a site in Charlotte and this old safety inspector was talking to a foreman. He said something like 'everyone worries about the big lifts but most of my incident reports are on little 5 ton jobs where guys get sloppy.' It really hit me because I've been guilty of that myself. On a small pick I'll skip double checking the rigging or not pay as close attention to the load chart. But he had a point. A 2 ton beam falling from 30 feet will kill you just as dead as a 20 ton one. I've started treating every lift like it's a critical pick no matter the weight now. Has anyone else noticed they get more relaxed on the small jobs and had to correct it?

Pulled up load charts for a 1999 Liebherr LTM 1050 last night and the numbers are way higher than I expected

I always figured older cranes would be seriously underpowered compared to modern stuff. Found a PDF from some German archive site comparing load charts across decades. That old Liebherr at 35 feet out radius still picks like 12 tons. That's wild for a 25 year old machine. Anyone else ever check old specs and get surprised at what those things can actually do?

Swing brake locked up on me mid lift last Wednesday

I was setting steel beams at a school renovation down on Elm Street when suddenly my swing brake just seized up. We were maybe 30 feet up with a 2 ton beam swinging and I had to feather the controls to keep it from spinning out of control. Ended up having to set the load down gentle and call the shop for a backup rig. Has anyone else had their swing brake actuator fail without warning like that? Im thinking about switching to a different brand of brake pads but not sure what holds up better on these older Grove cranes.

Just realized my old hand signals were completely different from the new crew's system

Worked a site over in Gary last week, first time with a new team. I'm up in the cab doing my usual hand signals for boom up and swing left, and the oiler on the ground just stares at me for a solid 10 seconds. Turns out this crew uses the NCCCO hand signals, not the old school ones I learned back in 2002. My left hand pointing up with a fist means boom up to me, but to them that meant extend? Total confusion. Had to climb down and sort it out before we even moved a beam. I guess I gotta update my signal book. Any of you guys switch signal systems recently? How long did it take to stick?

Old timer at the Port of Savannah gave me a tip that saved my rig

I was running a Grove GMK5250L at the Port of Savannah a few months back, around 5pm on a Friday. This guy, must have been 60 years in the trade, walked up and pointed at my tag line. He said 'son, you're pulling too hard on that swing brake, you're gonna burn out the clutch pack in 3 months of daily lifts.' I laughed it off but looked up the service manual that weekend and he was dead on. I adjusted my tension and now the crane runs smoother on these 40-ton container moves. Has anyone else had a veteran operator catch something you missed in the moment?

Just ran into the 'crane dance' stat that shocked me

I was reading through some OSHA reports last night and found out that something like 60% of mobile crane accidents happen during setup, not the actual lift. That blew my mind because I always thought the heavy lift was the risky part. Turns out outriggers not being set right or ground giving way is the real killer. The report said a lot of those accidents could be avoided with a simple load test before the job starts. Has anyone else looked into this stat or seen it play out on a site?

Am I the only one who switched from manual taglines to using a spotter exclusively?

I used to handle taglines myself on every job for 8 years, but after a close call on a windy site in Omaha last spring I handed that rope off to a spotter. Now my lifts feel smoother and I can focus on the boom swing without my arm getting tired. Has anyone else made this switch or do you still prefer keeping the tagline control to yourself?

Run a Liebherr LTM 1050 for 6 months then went back to a Grove RT530E

I spent half a year on a Liebherr LTM 1050 at a job site outside Houston. That machine has all the bells and whistles, computer tells you everything. But I couldn't get past the cabin layout, felt like I was sitting in a fighter jet with too many buttons. Then last month I got reassigned to a Grove RT530E on a different site. That old Grove is a tank, simple controls, no nonsense. I can feel the load way better with the mechanical systems. The Liebherr is nicer for the operator on paper but the Grove gets the job done faster for me. Anyone else prefer the older stuff over new tech?

Rough terrain crane vs all-terrain crane on a muddy site in Vermont last week

We had a job up near Burlington where the ground was pure mud from all the rain. I brought my rough terrain crane and my buddy brought his all-terrain. His all-terrain got stuck twice and we had to pull it out with a dozer. My rough terrain walked right through it no problem. Ever had a situation where the wrong crane type cost you a whole day?

Warning: was using the wrong hand signals on tower cranes for 2 years

I was on a job in Austin last month and the oiler just stared at me when I gave the 'boom up' signal. He said 'you mean this?' and did a completely different hand motion. Turns out I learned from an old guy who used some weird local variation. Nobody ever corrected me because I guess they figured it out from context. Has anyone else found out they were using outdated or wrong signals without knowing it?

Boom pendulum caught me off guard on a job in Portland

I was lifting a HVAC unit on a tight rooftop in Portland last Tuesday and the wind caught the load just enough to start a nasty pendulum swing. I had to cut the hoist speed and let it settle with a tagline before I could set it down clean. Has anyone else had to deal with surprise swings from gusty wind?

Old timer at the yard told me to stop rushing my rigging setup

I was working a job in Raleigh last fall, lifting some heavy HVAC units onto a roof. This guy, probably 60 plus years in the trade, just walked over and said 'you're gonna drop that because you tied it like a kid with shoelaces.' I was mad at first but he showed me how to double check every turn and make sure the weight was dead center. Now I take an extra 10 minutes on every lift (even the small ones) and I haven't had a single load shift on me since. Anybody else have an old head set them straight like that?

Heard a site safety guy say load limits are just suggestions and I had to walk away

Was on a job in Phoenix last Thursday and this safety coordinator tells me that crane load charts are 'more like guidelines for careful operators.' I told him that's how you bend a boom or drop a beam on someone's car. Has anyone else run into safety people who don't take the ratings seriously?

Old timer on a job site near St. Louis taught me about boom angles

Back in 2008 I was running a 50 ton Grove on a bridge project. An older operator named Hank walked over during a break and pointed at my boom. He said "You're running too shallow for that pick radius, son. That load chart is a suggestion not a promise." He showed me how to adjust the angle by just 3 degrees and that boom settled right down. Has anyone else had an old hand give you advice you still use today?

Hit 10,000 hours of crane time last month and it's got me thinking about the old school vs new school debate

On one side, the old guys say seat time and feel are everything, but I'm seeing younger operators run these new computer-assisted cranes that can auto-level and avoid tip-overs. Which matters more at the end of the day, raw experience or the tech that's taking over?

Liebherr vs Manitowoc for tight urban jobs - Liebherr wins every time

Been running cranes in downtown Seattle for 8 years now (like, actual downtown, not the suburbs). Last month we had a job wedged between two buildings that were maybe 12 feet apart. My foreman wanted a Manitowoc 999 because that's what he grew up on. I pushed for a Liebherr LTM 1050. The Liebherr's telescoping boom and compact footprint let us set up without closing a whole block of traffic. The Manitowoc would've needed way more counterweight space. We got the steel up in 3 days instead of 5. Any of you guys had to fight over brand choices on a cramped site?

Switched from friction pads to synthetic wedges on my tower crane after 12 years

I used to use the old school friction pads for leveling my crane on uneven ground. They worked fine but took forever to adjust and always slipped a bit. About 6 months ago my foreman made me try synthetic wedges on a job in Omaha. Now setup time dropped from 45 minutes to 20 and the crane feels solid as a rock. Has anyone else made this switch or are you still using the old pads?

Warning: my load cell readings drifted 15% after one season in the Texas sun

Been running a Liebherr LTM 1050 for 3 years and never thought the heat would mess with the load cell calibration until I started seeing 15% higher readings on hot afternoons. Turns out the direct sun on the sensor housing was throwing everything off by the end of July. Anybody else have to rig up shade covers for their load cells in hot climates?

Spent $200 on a radio remote for my older crane and it paid off in one afternoon

Bought a used radio remote setup off a guy retiring last spring and hooked it up to my '93 Link-Belt. Stuck picking steel in the rain that day and being able to walk around the load instead of yelling at a spotter saved me at least 2 hours. Anyone else running old iron with new tech like this?

Was on a job in Cincinnati last Thursday where some guy set up a 90 ton lift and a 30 mph gust rolled his load sideways before he even got it 10 feet off the ground. How hard is it to look at a radar app before you start rigging?

Took me 3 hours to realize my swing brake was barely dragging

I spent a whole morning thinking my crane was losing power on the hoist, turned out the swing brake was just barely engaged and dragging. Anyone else ever waste half a shift on a stupid little adjustment?
