I was riding the swing brake on every stop for 2 years and a 22 year old oiler caught it
Last Tuesday I was landing a load of rebar on a job in Fresno and this oiler who looked like he just got out of high school said something that stuck with me. He asked why I was feathering the swing brake on every single stop instead of letting the house coast down. I told him that's how I was shown in 2021 and nobody ever said different. He pulled up the manual on his phone and showed me the brake is for holding, not stopping, and I was cooking the linings on a 2019 Liebherr for two years. Checked my brake temp with a cheap IR gun that afternoon and it read 140 degrees hotter than the other machine on site. Has anyone else been taught to ride the brake like this, or did I just get a bad first trainer?
