That assembly chart quote is backwards, and I'll die on that hill

Last week a rigger at the 40th St yard told me I should always run the tag line on the off-side of the load, which goes against everything my old foreman taught me over 12 years. After three jobs testing his way on a 5-ton swing, I ended up fighting the drift twice as hard in a 15 mph crosswind. Has anyone else found that the manufacturer's recommended setup only works when the wind is dead calm, or are we all just expected to adjust on the fly?

Run the tag line on the downwind side and keep it low, about chest height. That way you're pulling against the drift instead of chasing it. Crosswinds on a 5-ton swing are a whole different animal, the chart is just a starting point. I've had better luck with a second tag on the tail for anything over 3 tons in real wind.
