Password managers vs. brain memory - which actually keeps you safer?

I see people online swearing by password managers like LastPass or Bitwarden, but I've also talked to two IT guys who say writing passwords in a notebook at home is better because you can't hack paper. What's your take after dealing with a breach or account lockout yourself?

How many pages is that notebook now?

It's funny you say "how many pages" like that notebook just keeps growing. But here's the thing about the "paper is unhackable" argument - it's not entirely true. If someone breaks into your house and finds that notebook, you're just as screwed as if they guessed your password online. Plus a notebook doesn't help when you're on vacation and need to log into your bank account from your phone. I lost my wallet once with a few passwords written down and it was a nightmare changing everything after. What do you do when you're away from home and need one of those notebook passwords?
