Am I the only one who checks the anchor store first to gauge if a mall is really dead?
Was standing in the food court at Northgate in Durham when an old guy in a security jacket said the anchor stores tell you everything, and if they're still open the rest is just hurting. I started doing it after that, walk straight to the big stores first before I bother taking any pics. Curious if other people here use the anchor store as their quick test or if you just count empty storefronts instead?
There was a Sears at Southpoint that stayed open way longer than anything else around it, and I remember thinking the whole place was fine because of that. Then it finally closed and within a year half the mall was gone. Now I check the anchor first too, but I also peek at whether the anchor looks busy or just open.
