Fake $5 coupons at the Rochester Hannaford self-checkout

Scanned a $5 off $25 coupon from a random website and it went through, but the receipt flagged it as a manufacturer fraud code. Tried it at the Manchester store and the cashier confiscated it and gave me a talk about counterfeit coupons. Is there a reliable way to spot fake printable coupons before wasting a trip and embarrassing yourself at checkout?

Even the cashiers can't tell sometimes, I watched a guy argue for ten minutes at my local store over a coupon that looked totally real. Meanwhile the self-checkout beeps at me for breathing too loud.
