Stumbled on a stat that 80% of business happens through referrals in Detroit

I was reading a Detroit Regional Chamber report last week and saw that 80% of business deals in the metro area come from personal referrals, not cold calls. It actually made me rethink how I spend my time at networking events since I usually just hand out cards. Has anyone else seen this play out in their own networking here in Detroit?

That 80% stat makes sense to me... I'm usually the one forgetting to follow up on a referral after I get distracted by my kid's snack emergency. Maybe I should start handing out juice boxes with my contact info taped to them, at least that'd be memorable.

Yeah but here's the thing nobody's really talking about - that 80% stat probably includes a bunch of ghost referrals where people just mention a business name but never actually follow up. I've been in Detroit networking groups for like 3 years now and half the time someone says "I'll refer you to my guy" they just forget about it the next day. The real trick isn't getting people to say they'll refer you, it's making it stupid easy for them to do it. Like I started sending people a quick text with a link to my Google page and the response rate went way up. So the stat might be real but it only works if the referrals actually happen, not just get talked about.
