A talk with my neighbor about his old Detroit Diesel changed how I see my own work

He's a retired logger, and I was helping him with his 8V71 last weekend. He said, 'You know, I never worried about it being perfect, just that it ran when I needed it.' That hit different because I've been stressing over every little spec on my own projects. It made me think maybe I focus too much on the tiny details and not enough on the big picture of just keeping things moving. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where a simple comment shifted your focus?

Man, that's a solid point. I used to get so hung up on making everything just right in my own shop, polishing stuff that didn't need it. Hearing something like that from someone who used their gear hard makes you realize "good enough" is often perfect. It's about the thing doing its job, not winning a beauty contest. That logger knows what's up.

You're totally right, sean_walker45. I spent a whole weekend once trying to get the perfect mirror finish on a hammer handle. A mirror finish. On a hammer. My buddy saw it and just asked if I was planning to check my hair while I framed a wall. It was a tool, not a piece of art. That kind of thinking just slows you down from actually building anything useful.
