Field fix for a 3126 lost me 4 hours, what would you have done?

Last Tuesday I was working a 2003 International 4300 with a 3126 that kept dying under load outside of Bakersfield. I chased fuel pressure for 3 hours, swapped the primary filter, and finally found the pick-up tube screen in the tank was clogged with what looked like algae sludge. I didn't have a replacement screen on the truck, so I ran it with the screen removed and got the customer moving, but now I'm second guessing if that will bite me later on a 7-year-old tank. Would you have done the same temp fix or towed it back to the shop for a proper tank drop?

Man, algae sludge in the tank of a 7-year-old rig? That black gunk is no joke, it'll plug everything downstream once it breaks loose. I get why you pulled the screen to get him rolling, but that stuff is still floating around in there and your filters are gonna be eating it now. Four hours gone and no screen on the truck, that's just brutal luck. Me, I'd probably have done the same thing to keep the customer happy and told him to bring it in soon for a tank drop.
