My buddy in the shop said something about DEF quality that got me thinking

He was working on a 2022 Freightliner with a persistent SCR fault, and he told me the driver had been buying the cheapest DEF from a no-name truck stop off I-95. My buddy said, 'You wouldn't put watered-down fuel in it, so why treat the DEF system any different?' I always figured DEF was DEF, but now I'm starting to check the spec sheets and look for the API certification mark. Has anyone else seen problems tied directly to poor quality diesel exhaust fluid?

Remember hearing about a guy who mixed DEF with tap water to save a buck. Totally seized the whole dosing pump.

Yeah, that "DEF is DEF" thing is a trap. Saw a Cascadia with crystallized injectors last month. Guy was using some off-brand jugs from a farm supply store. Total mess.
