Old timer at Thompson's shop changed how I check injectors

Guy named Hank, been turning wrenches since the 70s, saw me replacing a set of injectors on a Detroit 60 and said 'kid, you're wasting time pulling them blind'. He showed me to run a compression test first, even if it stumbles, then isolation test each cylinder with a temp gun before ordering parts. Saved me 300 bucks on a job last month - has anyone else had an old school tip that actually works better than the book says?

Man that Hank sounds like a real gem, those old tricks save you more than any manual.

Yeah but Hank's probably the type who'll sell you a junker and smile about it.

Honestly @hugo238, I gotta push back a little here. I've known guys like Hank and they're usually not trying to screw you over, they just work with what they got. Those old tricks like tapping a starter with a wrench or using a penny to bypass a bad fuse can save you a tow truck bill when you're in a pinch. Ngl, some of the best advice I ever got was from a crusty mechanic who didn't own a single digital tool.
