Remember when injectors lasted 400k without a thought

Been turning wrenches since 1998 and I swear the old mechanical pumps on 12 valves just ran forever. Now these common rail systems with EGR and DPF need attention every 150k or so, and the parts are triple what they used to cost. I had an 01 Cummins come in last week with 480k on the original injection pump, still started in 10 degree weather. When did we trade simple reliability for all this electronics and emissions garbage? Anyone else out there miss the days of a straight mechanical motor?

Tbh I read a article last year from some diesel tech magazine that broke down the failure points on modern injectors. The biggest killer was the DPF regen cycles dumping extra fuel into the cylinders, which washes the oil off the injector tips and causes carbon buildup. That's why you see the 6.7 Powerstrokes and Duramaxs needing injectors at 150k, while the old mechanical stuff just kept ticking.
