My old art teacher saw my tablet sketch and said something I haven't stopped thinking about
I ran into my old art teacher Ms. Whitfield at a coffee shop in Buffalo last month, and she asked to see what I've been working on. I showed her some digital pieces on my iPad, and she said the work was strong but it felt "too safe," like I was coloring inside lines I never drew. That stuck with me because she always pushed us to mess things up on purpose, and I realized I've been cleaning up my brushwork to look professional instead of letting it feel alive. Has anyone else had a teacher or mentor call out your digital style in a way that stung but turned out to be true?

Had a painting teacher in community college tell me my work looked like I was afraid of the canvas, which stung for about a week. What helped was going back to charcoal for a month, big messy strokes, no undo button, just to remind my hand what loose felt like. When I went back to the tablet after that, my line work actually had some life in it.
