The guy who sold me my first drawing tablet in Cincinnati said to skip the screen and learn on a plain slab first
When I bought my first Wacom Intuos in 2019, the guy at the shop in Cincinnati told me to skip the fancy screen tablet and learn on the plain one for at least 6 months. I ignored him because I thought watching my hand directly would be way easier, so I dropped $400 on a screened tablet instead. I spent 4 months making sloppy lines and constantly fighting my own posture looking down at the screen, and my line work never got cleaner. When I finally switched back to the $80 slab he sold me, my strokes got steadier in about 3 weeks because my eyes were on the monitor the whole time, not my hand. Anyone else get steered toward the cheaper setup first and hate hearing it was right?
Man that stings because I did almost the exact same thing. Bought a screen tablet right away thinking it would be a shortcut, then spent months hunched over it with my neck killing me and lines that still looked like shaky garbage. @tylermurray saying it just trains hand eye coordination kinda misses the point, for me the slab forced my eyes up on the monitor so my hand and cursor finally synced up after years of fighting it. Hate that the shop guy was right but he totally was.
