A chat with a guy in Chiang Mai about his 'one bag' rule made me look at my own setup
I was working from a cafe here and saw a guy with just a small backpack. We got talking and he said he's been living out of that single bag for over two years now. He showed me his stuff, which was basically a laptop, a few clothes, and a small kit for everything else. I've been dragging a 40 liter pack and a rolling suitcase for the last eight months, thinking I needed all of it. It kind of hit me that I might be carrying a lot of things just because I can, not because I do. Has anyone else cut down to a super minimal pack and actually stuck with it?

That "carrying things just because I can" line is so real. I once brought a full size hair dryer on a camping trip, which is a choice I still think about.

Wasn't there a whole article about how we overpack because modern gear makes it too easy? @perry.jessica, your hair dryer story is the perfect example. I read about people bringing cast iron skillets or full coffee makers into the backcountry. It's like the weight of our stuff doesn't matter until we're the ones carrying it five miles in. The line between being prepared and just showing off your new gear is very, very thin.

Remember that guy who packed a blender for a week in the woods?
