My neighbor saw my deck stain and said it looked patchy

He told me I was putting it on too thin with a brush. Said to use a roller and really soak the wood. I switched to a 3/8 inch nap roller and put on a heavy coat. The color is way more even now. Anyone have a good trick for keeping the stain from dripping off the roller?

Yeah, that heavy nap roller can really hold a lot of stain. Try rolling it out on a scrap piece of plywood or a tray liner first to get rid of the excess. You want it wet but not dripping before it even touches the deck. What kind of stain are you using, oil or water based?

My first deck had permanent drip shadows.

Oh man, I learned that drip lesson the hard way too. Good call from @avery_ross19 on rolling off the extra, my deck looked like a crime scene before I figured that out.
