My neighbor's advice about drywall mud ruined my first patch job

So my neighbor Dave told me to mix drywall mud really thin like pancake batter for my first patch job. I followed his tip exactly and it all just dripped down the wall and took forever to dry. Turns out you want it more like peanut butter consistency for patching holes. I ended up scraping it all off and redoing it with thicker mud and it worked perfect the second time. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a well-meaning neighbor on a project?

My buddy tried to fix a dent in his car with his neighbor's tip about using a plunger to pop it out. Ended up making the dent way worse and had to take it to a body shop.

Wait, he actually tried that on a real dent? Ngl that's insane to me, people really think a toilet plunger is a body shop tool. Honestly I've heard that hack floating around for years but I always figured it only works on super shallow dings, not actual dents. Tbh your buddy probably just sucked the paint right off or made the metal buckle worse by yanking on it wrong. Poor guy learned the hard way that some stuff is better left to the professionals.
