Shoutout to a $5 paint scraper for saving my weekend project

I spent $15 on a fancy multi-tool first, but it just bent on the old window frame. The cheap one got the job done in half the time, why do the expensive ones always seem to break first?

My brother had the same thing happen with a $40 putty knife from the hardware store. The blade just snapped on some old caulk. Sometimes the simple tool is just made with thicker steel because it doesn't have to do ten different jobs.

That's a really good question actually and I wonder if it has to do with the quality of the steel they're using versus just the thickness. Like, is there a specific brand or type of steel that holds up better for scraping or are they all basically the same cheap metal? I know with my old truck, the body shop guys swore by a certain brand of putty knife because the carbon content in the steel was different and it held an edge longer. But for a paint scraper, maybe it's all about how the blade is tempered or what kind of heat treatment it goes through? Seems like the "multi-tool" ones might be made softer so you can bend them for different angles but then they just give out on tough jobs.
