My coworker's 2 minute phone fix saved me $180 at the repair shop

Last Tuesday my screen started flickering like crazy. Took it to a shop in Denver, they quoted me 180 for a new display. Mentioned it to Dave at lunch, he just shrugged and said "clean the charging port with a toothpick, happens to my phone every winter." I laughed it off but tried it that night with a plastic toothpick, gently scraped out this gray dust ball from the port, and boom, screen was fine. Apparently lint can mess with the grounding or something? Has anyone else fixed a weird display issue that way? I'm still kinda blown.
