18 years of clamping the wrong way, a jig showed me

I've been building workbenches since my dad's garage in Toledo, always tightening my pipe clamps until the wood squeaked. Last month I made a simple corner jig for a glue-up and realized my joints were slightly off every single time. The jig forced the boards flat and I saw my clamp pressure was bending the frame instead of holding it square. Took me about 2 hours to rebuild the jig with scrap plywood and now I check every clamp with a cheap square before tightening. Anyone else have a moment where a $5 tool made you rethink a habit you'd had for decades?
