Found a pegboard trick from a retired carpenter at the Habitat ReStore

I was at the Habitat ReStore in Concord last Saturday and this older guy showed me how he mounts pegboard using 3/4 inch plywood spacers behind it. He said most people screw it flat against the wall and that ruins the airflow and makes hooks pop out. Has anyone else tried that method or do you just use the standard furring strips?

Learned that one the hard way years ago hanging pegboard in my garage. Put it flat against the wall and every time I pulled a wrench off the hook, the whole thing would pop loose. Ended up ripping it all down and using 1x2 furring strips instead, which worked fine but took forever to level. That plywood spacer trick sounds smarter than my approach, especially for getting some air behind it so moisture doesn't build up.

@taylorlewis yeah i saw something on a DIY channel about using washers as spacers behind pegboard. basically you just put a few over the screws before you hang it. gives you that same air gap without having to cut furring strips. i thought it was genius cause you can adjust how far out it sits by stacking more washers. beats leveling a bunch of 1x2s for sure.
