My old man's 2x4 rack idea was dead wrong, cost me a busted drill bit
He swore by screwing the top shelf in from underneath to save space, but after the third bit snapped and the shelf sagged under 60 lbs of clamps last Saturday, I flipped it over and bolted through the top instead, has anyone else had to un-learn a parent's shortcut the hard way?

Did your dad ever have a reason for doing it that way, or was it just habit? I used to trust whatever my father did in the shop without question, but after a few bent brackets and stripped screws, I learned the hard way that some shortcuts are actually just mistakes. Bolting through the top takes a little more time, but it holds way better, and that's what matters in the end.
