Figured out a way to hide butt joints better with a hot mud trick
I was getting sick of sanding down butt joints in my buddy's basement in Akron last month. They always seemed to leave a tiny ridge no matter how careful I was. Then I tried applying a thin coat of hot mud first, let it set for about 15 minutes, and then hit it with the regular compound over top. The key was using the 45 minute setting so it didn't bubble up. It cut my sanding time down by nearly half on a 12 foot run. Has anyone else tried this method or got a better way to flatten those seams?

Hold up, wait. You said Akron? I'm out in Canton and I've been wrestling with basement butt joints all summer. I gotta try this hot mud trick, that 15 minute wait sounds like the magic part. I usually just slap on all-purpose and sand for an hour feelin like a dummy. Does it really not bubble on you with the 45 minute stuff? I'm half tempted to drive up to Akron and see this flat seam with my own eyes 'cause I don't believe it.

Used to think hot mud was snake oil til I tried it. Never going back.
