Chatting with a old timer changed how I check door locks

Ran into a retired mechanic named Hank at the supply house last Tuesday. He said most guys check door locks by listening for the click, but he always pressed on the door after the click to feel for a half inch of play. I tried it on a Otis setup that afternoon and caught a loose roller arm I would have missed otherwise. Has anyone else picked up a simple trick from an older mechanic that made a big difference?

Isn't it funny how the real shortcuts in life never make it into the official instructions? It's like how my grandma showed me to tap a jar lid on the counter before twisting, no YouTube video mentions that but it works every time. Guess the best tips live in peoples heads and disappear when they do.

Learned that one the hard way after missing a bad latch on a Schlage. Now I always push on the door after the click. Feels like it should be common sense but no one does it till an old timer shows you. There's a ton of little things like that you just don't pick up from manuals or YouTube. The old guys have real world experience that bypasses all the fancy training. Wish more of them would share their secrets while theyre still around.
