I was dead wrong about those budget machine room controllers

For years I told anyone who would listen that spending less than $800 on a machine room controller was asking for trouble. I had a bad experience with a cheap one back in 2018 on a job in Cleveland that failed after 6 months. But last spring I needed a quick replacement for a stuck unit in a small apartment building and grabbed a unit from a brand I won't name for $350. It has been running smooth for 10 months now with zero issues. Has anyone else had a cheap controller surprise them in a good way?

I was out in Denver last month and told a guy exactly this over coffee, and now I feel like a total clown. My $300 controller is still humming along like a champ while his fancy brand name unit needed a firmware update three times already. Sure, ten months is not a decade but my old expensive unit failed at month eight so what's the difference really. Maybe we all just got lucky or maybe the cheap ones finally caught up.

Ten months isn't quite a year in the commercial world yet.
