Rant: A simple door lock adjustment turned into a 4 hour hunt for a broken wire

Got called to a 10 story office building for a door not closing fully on the 7th floor. The tenant said it was just a bit slow, so I figured it was a basic lock adjustment, maybe 30 minutes. After checking the lock and the clutch, everything seemed fine. Started tracing the door operator circuit and found a tiny break in the wire inside the conduit run from the car top. That single broken strand took over three hours to find with a meter. Has anyone else had a 'quick fix' turn into a full day because of a hidden wiring fault like that?

Ugh, those hidden wire breaks are the absolute worst.

Oh man, tell me about it, @lee_martinez97. I was reading this story about a guy who had a flickering light in his kitchen. He replaced the switch, the fixture, everything. Turns out the wire was nicked inside the wall where a nail went in years ago. He had to cut open a huge section of drywall just to find a tiny little break in the insulation. Total nightmare.

Read a forum post where a guy spent six hours chasing a bad ground in a wall.
