Three years of rope grooves and now the drum is shot

Last week I finally pulled the machine out on a 20 year old Otis in a building downtown. The grooves on the drive sheave were so deep you could see daylight through where the rope had worn it down. Three years ago I flagged this during a PM and told the building manager it needed resurfacing or a new sheave. They said they'd "look into it" and never did. Now I'm doing a full replacement that's gonna cost them over 4 grand plus a weekend shutdown. Has anyone else had luck pushing back on building owners who ignore these warnings until it's an emergency?

andrew got it exactly right man. this is the same thing that happens every time someone kicks the can down the road on a mechanical issue. they think they're saving money by ignoring it but they just end up paying triple and making everyone miserable. the worst part is that they probably complained about the cost of the weekend shutdown too like we're the ones who caused it. i've had building managers try to argue that the grooves weren't that bad yet and i just show them the old photos from three years ago. at a certain point you gotta protect yourself and put everything in writing so when it blows up they can't blame you for their own negligence.

Waved my arms at a landlord for two years about a leaking hydro line until it blew and flooded the basement. Guess who got to explain to his wife why he's working a 16 hour Saturday.
