Rant: My apartment's fire alarm went off at 3 AM because of steam, so I tried the shower cap trick.

I was in my kitchen in Chicago, boiling pasta water. The alarm is right outside the door and it's super sensitive. The steam hit it and it started that awful, piercing beep. My dog was freaking out. I remembered a hack from a forum: put a shower cap over it when you're cooking. I grabbed one from the bathroom, stretched it over the unit, and the beeping stopped instantly. It's been two weeks and I just leave the cap on the cabinet knob nearby now. Anyone have a better fix for these overly sensitive alarms, or is the shower cap the go-to?

That middle of the night panic is the worst. The shower cap trick is a lifesaver.

The shower cap is a classic move! I used to wave a towel at mine like I was trying to land a helicopter, which just made me look insane. My landlord finally swapped the unit after my "enthusiastic fanning" knocked a picture frame off the wall. Your method is definitely more graceful than my flailing!
