I finally got my hands on my great aunt's handwritten 'Sunday Gravy' recipe from 1972 after my cousin found it in an old shoebox.
The recipe calls for a full can of tomato paste and a 'pinch' of sugar that my cousin swears is actually a tablespoon, so has anyone else had to decode a family recipe's vague instructions before?

My grandma's "dash" of salt was always a full teaspoon, so I started by halving it.

My mom's "pinch" of black pepper in her meatloaf was basically a palmful from the big can. I had to watch her make it three times before I caught on. Those old recipes are like a secret language only they understood. You almost need a video of them cooking to get it right. My advice is to start with less and taste as you go, because you can always add more sugar later. That full can of paste sounds right though, it gives the gravy that deep, rich color.
