Question about fabric weight and drape in summer dresses
I was showing a friend a linen dress I made last month and she said it looked stiff, like a sack. She told me to feel the fabric of her own dress, a rayon blend she got in Austin. The difference was huge. Her dress moved with her, mine just hung there. I realized I'd been picking linen based on the idea it was 'breathable' for summer, but I wasn't checking the actual weight or weave. I went back to my local shop and compared a 5 oz linen to a 3.5 oz one, and the lighter one draped completely differently. Now I always bring a small weight to the store to test how fabric falls over my hand before I buy. Has anyone else had a fabric choice totally change the look of a simple design?

Honestly, bringing a weight to the store seems a bit extra. It's just a summer dress, not a structural engineering project. The fabric will soften up after a wash or two anyway.

Have you ever bought something that felt okay in the store but was totally see-through in sunlight? That's the risk. A lightweight scarf in your bag shows how sheer the fabric really is under those bright dressing room lights. It saved me from a linen pants disaster last month. A quick check beats a return trip later.

Oh man, that's genius. Sorry holly_garcia, but I'm team scarf-check now. My closet is full of "indoor only" shirts thanks to bad lighting.
