Heard a landscaper in Austin say 'a fence is only as good as the dirt around it' while I was grabbing coffee this morning.
It made me rethink how I prep the soil and backfill every single post hole, especially in that heavy clay, to prevent future lean.

That line about the dirt around the fence is SO true. I learned the hard way on my own place. I used to just tamp the clay back in the hole and call it good, but after a few wet seasons, I had a whole section start to tilt. Now I always mix in a ton of gravel for drainage right around the post before I backfill. It makes a night and day difference in keeping things solid.

Reminds me of the time I tried to fix a wobbly mailbox post with just dirt... it was leaning again after the first big rain. Ended up having to dig it all out and start over with a bag of quick-crete.

Seriously? I feel like people make a huge deal out of this. My uncle just threw the dirt back in for his fence like 15 years ago and it's still standing straight, no gravel or anything fancy. Maybe some dirt is just better than other dirt, lol.
